It was once the capital and trading center of the Arabian Nabataean Empire. It had its heyday two millennia ago – at that time Petra was located at the crossroads of several caravan routes. One of them: the ancient incense route.

The famous desert city owed its once legendary wealth mainly to the many goods that were transported through it and traded in it. Countless caravans brought frankincense and myrrh, spices and silk, pearls and precious stones, ebony and ivory to Petra. The precious goods came from large parts of the world known at the time: southern Arabia, India, China, Africa…

The fragrance

Two millennia after Petra’s heyday, perfumer Nathalie Gracia-Cetto once again leads a caravan through the Jordanian desert city. It is richly loaded with precious resins, woods, spices, and delicacies from distant lands: Green tea, bergamot, and fennel seeds. Frankincense, rosemary, and licorice. Vanilla, benzoin, and fine woods.

In addition to the licorice note that is predominant in the course of the fragrance, this perfume contains another coveted commodity from the caravan era: myrrh! The noble resin is an all-time fragrance classic from the Orient, which was used in ancient Egypt 3,000 years ago. With its spicy-sweet, balsamic scent, the myrrh resin has been used since ancient times for ritual and medicinal purposes, for perfuming – or as an aphrodisiac.
